With the help and support of the local community, Maui United Way raised just over $890,000 this year, which will go toward 33 health and human services programs in Maui County, according to an announcement.

The initiative was made possible as a result of more than 300 businesses and individuals who provided their time and money in order to ensure that the needs of fellow community members were fulfilled, said Maui United Way President Nicholas Winfrey. “We are so grateful to the amazing individuals and businesses who have continued their support and trust in Maui United Way. Your generous contributions of time, talent and financial support will continue to make an impact within Maui County for years to come. With your continued support throughout the last year, Maui United Way funding provided 31,266 nonprofit services, 810 school supply kits, and over 2,600 toys for keiki in need during the holiday season.

“Thank you for entrusting your support in Maui United Way, so that we may continue to address Maui County’s most vital needs,” said Nicholas.

Maui United Way also held its 50th annual Meeting and Recognition Luncheon at which Mahalo Awards were given to outstanding businesses, agencies and individuals who had contributed to MUW’s mission of empowering our Maui community. The award winners and their categories are as follows: Outstanding Foundation — Bendon Family Foundation; Outstanding Foundation — Alexander & Baldwin; Corporate Contributor of the Year — Maui Electric Co.; National Corporate Contributor of the Year — Sentry Insurance; Bank of the Year — First Hawaiian Bank; Hotel of the Year — Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club; Partner Agency of the Year — Feed My Sheep; and Campaign Excellence Award — Enterprise Holdings.

Maui United Way installed its new incoming officers, recognizing Jacob Tavares of Mahi Pono as board chairman, Leigh Drewry of Lumeria Maui as vice chairman, Wil Cambra of Walker Industries as treasurer, and Mark Welling of Enterprise Holdings as secretary.

Alexander & Baldwin provided a check for $50,000 for the 2018-19 initiative, showing the support of their affiliated companies, including A&B Properties, Kahului Trucking and Storage, Grace Pacific and McBryde Resources Inc.

The Matson Foundation kicked off the upcoming 2019-20 initiative year by donating $10,000 to Maui United Way.
